The Heritage series, Oak Summit, Stratford, Lincoln, and Vista lines each shipped with drums sized to the door height and weight. A 7-foot door takes a different drum pitch than an 8-foot, and the cable diameter must match the drum groove or it will chew itself apart in weeks.

Check the sticker on the inside of your Amarr door sections for the model and serial number. If the sticker is gone, measure the drum diameter across the face and count the cable grooves - most residential Amarr doors use 4-inch drums with 1/8-inch or 5/32-inch aircraft-grade galvanized cable. We carry both OEM Amarr drums and quality aftermarket equivalents from DDM and Prime-Line that meet the same specs. Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

• Door hangs crooked or one side drops faster. When one cable frays or slips on its drum, the door loses balanced lift. The opener strains, the door torques in the track, and the rollers start popping out. • Visible fraying, rust, or broken strands on the cable. Aircraft cable is woven from 7 strands of 7 wires each. Amarr drums are cast iron, and hairline cracks from impact or age spread fast under load. We listen for this on every tune-up - it’s cheaper to replace a drum than a drum plus cable plus bent track.
• Door rises 6-12 inches then stops hard. The cables have slipped and wound unevenly, so the opener hits its force limit. The safety reverse kicks in, but the real problem is mechanical, not electronic. Running it repeatedly just deep-grooves the drum where the cable has bunched.

DIY or Call Us?

What we do not recommend: unbolting a cable drum with the spring still wound. The torsion spring above your Amarr door stores enough force to lift 150-250 pounds. If the winding cone slips while you’re working on the drum, the bar can break an arm or worse.
