Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

Amarr cable and drum replacement in Fort Worth typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we stock the common Amarr sizes on every truck. Most cable and drum swaps are finished in under an hour, same day you call. You’ll know the part has failed when the door hangs crooked, cables look frayed or unspooled, or the door jams a few inches off the ground.

In Fort Worth, we see this most after a spring break. The spring goes, the door drops unevenly, and the cable winds off the drum in a tangled mess. The summer heat doesn’t help - garage temperatures in Texas push metal fatigue faster than cooler climates. Carl Dutton and our crew have replaced hundreds of these on Amarr doors across Fort Worth, from the older Heritage 1000 series still common in Ridglea to newer Stratford and Lincoln doors in Tanglewood.

Which Amarr Models This Applies To

Amarr has used several cable drum configurations over the years, and matching the right one matters. The Heritage series, Oak Summit, Stratford, Lincoln, and Vista lines each shipped with drums sized to the door height and weight. A 7-foot door takes a different drum pitch than an 8-foot, and the cable diameter must match the drum groove or it will chew itself apart in weeks.

Check the sticker on the inside of your Amarr door sections for the model and serial number. If the sticker is gone, measure the drum diameter across the face and count the cable grooves - most residential Amarr doors use 4-inch drums with 1/8-inch or 5/32-inch aircraft-grade galvanized cable. We carry both OEM Amarr drums and quality aftermarket equivalents from DDM and Prime-Line that meet the same specs. For most Fort Worth homeowners, the aftermarket saves $30-$50 with no practical difference in lifespan. The exception is the Amarr Classica collection with its heavier 2-inch steel sections - those drums carry more load, and we spec OEM or heavy-duty aftermarket on those specifically.

Mainspring Garage Door Co. is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Amarr, but we are factory-familiar with their full product line and stock the parts that fit.

Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • Door hangs crooked or one side drops faster. When one cable frays or slips on its drum, the door loses balanced lift. The opener strains, the door torques in the track, and the rollers start popping out. In Fort Worth’s clay soil neighborhoods like Wedgwood and Wedgewood East, we see this after foundation shift puts extra bind on the door frame.
  • Visible fraying, rust, or broken strands on the cable. Aircraft cable is woven from 7 strands of 7 wires each. Once the outer jacket shows rust or three-plus broken wires, the remaining strands carry overload. Texas humidity swings - 80% morning dew dropping to 30% afternoon sun - accelerate surface corrosion even in insulated garages.
  • Cable unspooled or looped off the drum. This usually follows a spring failure. The released tension lets the door slam, the drum spins free, and the cable turns into a bird’s nest. Do not run the opener - it will chew the cable or burn out the motor trying to lift a dead-weight door.
  • Grinding or clicking from the drum area during operation. A cracked drum hub spins eccentrically, wearing the cable unevenly. Amarr drums are cast iron, and hairline cracks from impact or age spread fast under load. We listen for this on every tune-up - it’s cheaper to replace a drum than a drum plus cable plus bent track.
  • Door rises 6-12 inches then stops hard. The cables have slipped and wound unevenly, so the opener hits its force limit. The safety reverse kicks in, but the real problem is mechanical, not electronic. Running it repeatedly just deep-grooves the drum where the cable has bunched.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Fort Worth Price Range
Amarr cable replacement (single) $130-$180
Amarr cable replacement (pair) $180-$250
Drum replacement (each, with cable) $160-$250
Cable + drum pair, full replacement $220-$340

The range depends on door height, whether the spring needs retensioning after the cable slip, and if the track or bottom bracket took damage when the cable failed. We quote the flat price before touching a tool - “quote first, then the wrench.” That price covers the part, the labor, lubrication of all moving points, and a safety check of spring balance and opener force settings. Every cable and drum job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it doesn’t run right, we come back at no charge. No paperwork fight, no he-said-she-said.

DIY or Call Us?

There is safe checking, and there is dangerous fixing. A homeowner can look at the cables for fraying, confirm the door is closed and the opener disconnected, and take a photo of the drum and any visible part numbers. That helps us bring the right replacement on the first trip.

What we do not recommend: unbolting a cable drum with the spring still wound. The torsion spring above your Amarr door stores enough force to lift 150-250 pounds. If the winding cone slips while you’re working on the drum, the bar can break an arm or worse. We have seen DIY attempts in Fort Worth end with bent top sections, cables through drywall, and emergency room visits. The cable and drum sit downstream of the spring system - you cannot safely service one without controlling the other. Call (817) 766-2028. We answer live, day or night, and most Amarr cable and drum jobs are done in a single visit because the parts are already on the truck.
