Clopay Torsion Spring Replacement: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

Clopay torsion spring replacement in Fort Worth typically runs $180-$340 installed, and we stock the right springs for most Clopay models on our trucks. Most residential jobs are finished in under two hours, same day you call. You’ll know the spring has failed when the door feels suddenly heavy, won’t stay open halfway, or you heard a loud bang from the garage yesterday and now the opener strains but barely lifts.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay builds their doors around specific spring geometries, and getting it wrong means a door that slams shut or drifts open. We replace torsion springs on Clopay’s Classic, Gallery, and Reserve Wood collections, plus the Avante and Modern Steel lines common in newer Fort Worth builds around Walsh Ranch and the Edwards Ranch neighborhoods.

The right match depends on three things: the door’s weight, its height, and the inside diameter of the existing spring. Clopay doors from the 2000s often used 1-3/4″ or 2″ ID springs with wire sizes between .218 and .250, but the newer Coachman and Canyon Ridge lines can run heavier. The spec label is usually on the winding cone or the stationary cone, stamped with wire gauge, length, and wind direction. If that label is rusted over, which we see plenty of after Fort Worth hail seasons, we measure on-site.

We’re an independent service shop, not affiliated with Clopay. We carry OEM-grade springs where they make sense, and we also source high-cycle aftermarket equivalents that match Clopay’s torque specs exactly. For most Fort Worth homes, the aftermarket spring lasts just as long and costs less. We quote both options and let you decide.

Signs Your Clopay Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

  • The door feels heavier than usual. A torsion spring carries the full weight of your door. When one spring in a pair breaks, the opener suddenly lifts twice the load it was designed for. In Fort Worth, we see this most in March and October when temperature swings stress fatigued metal.
  • The door won’t stay put at half-open. A balanced Clopay door should sit still at any height. If it drifts down or shoots up, the spring has lost tension or snapped entirely. This is the test our technicians run first on every call.
  • You heard a loud bang from the garage. That sound is a torsion spring unwinding all at once, often at night when temperature drops contract the metal past its limit. By morning, the door feels like it weighs three hundred pounds.
  • The opener strains, hums, or reverses. LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers have force sensors that shut them down when the load exceeds safe limits. If your opener suddenly “quit working,” the spring is the first thing we check.
  • Visible gap in the spring coil. A broken torsion spring often shows a clean separation, sometimes with rust bleeding from the fracture point. We see this more on north-facing garage doors in Fort Worth where morning condensation lingers.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Single torsion spring replacement $180-$260
Dual spring replacement (standard on heavier Clopay doors) $260-$340

The range depends on door weight, spring size, and whether we’re matching one spring or a pair. Heavier Clopay models like the insulated Gallery or Reserve Wood lines need two springs, and we always recommend replacing both at once. When one fails, the other has cycled the same number of times and is living on borrowed time.

Every replacement includes the spring, winding and stationary cones, cables if they’re frayed, and a full balance and safety check. We state the flat price before any work starts. No surprises on the bill. The work is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing on every job.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a reason we start every spring call with a safety warning. Torsion springs store enough torque to cause serious injury or worse if they’re wound or unwound incorrectly. The winding bars can slip, the cone can fracture, and the spring can release with violent force. We’ve seen broken wrists and worse from homeowners who watched a video and thought they had it.

What you can safely do: pull the red emergency release cord to disconnect the opener, prop the door with a sturdy ladder if you must get a vehicle out, and check the spring for a visible gap. What you should not do: touch the winding cones, attempt to add tension with makeshift bars, or trust a standard socket set where solid steel winding bars belong.

We carry Clopay-compatible springs, cables, and hardware on every truck. Most Fort Worth jobs are finished in a single visit. Carl Dutton and our crew have been doing this work for more than a decade here, and we quote first, then the wrench. Call (817) 766-2028 when you’re ready.
